Greetings, fellow forest friends and curious critters. Welcome, officially, to Spore Mail, the newsletter that arrives in your inbox like a warm, slightly damp breeze from the understory. If you subscribed hoping for crisp infographics and monetization strategies, I am so sorry. That was never going to happen.

Out here, the ants are always doing something inexplicable, the moss never asks permission to grow, and I have been operating on roughly the same logic as both of them since longer than I care to measure. Chaos and cheer ride the same mycelial thread, and you are now, whether you intended it or not, part of the network.

Think of this as a postcard from the weird, warm part of the woods, short, a little silly, and honest about what it finds when it looks down at the ground long enough.

Field dispatches, week of issue one

I have it on good authority that the ferns are feeling extra dramatic this week. A reliable source, the wind, mostly, has confirmed they have been sighing louder than usual and performing slow, interpretive sways at no one in particular. I respect this deeply and have begun doing the same.

Infrastructure update: the old stump

Someone left a very encouraging pebble near the old stump. Smooth, round, placed with intention. I do not know who did this. I do not need to know. It was enough that someone, somewhere, thought the stump deserved a kind gesture. I have been thinking about that pebble more than is probably healthy.

Labor news: firefly union negotiations ongoing

I cannot confirm the rumors that the fireflies are unionizing for better overtime glow rates, but I am not ruling it out. They have been meeting at irregular hours. Their blinking has taken on a certain coordinated quality. I am rooting for them. Everyone deserves fair compensation for making the dark less dark.

Tiny joys worth borrowing this week

• Wave at a fern like you mean it. Not a polite nod, a real, full-arm, glad-to-see-you wave. It will not wave back, but something in you will feel marginally more alive.
• Share one ridiculous mushroom fact at dinner. Suggested opener: fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants. Watch the table recalibrate. You are welcome.
• Step outside and listen for thirty seconds. No podcast. No agenda. No optimization. Just you and whatever the world is doing without your help. It has been doing quite a lot.
• Tell someone they are doing a good job. Even if that someone is you. Especially if that someone is you. You have been doing more than you are giving yourself credit for, probably.
• Find one thing on the ground that a person moving at full speed would never notice. A seed. A beetle in transit. A tiny, cracked piece of acorn shell that held, briefly, something whole. Keep that image in your pocket for later.
